The thing that sets Romania apart is that it is involved in what we might call informal economic activity to a greater extent than in other European countries. It is impossible to obtain reliable information on salaries, taxable income and other important statistics related to individual citizens’ financial status because a great many people simply do not declare their full salaries and wages to the authorities, except in the case of those working directly for the state. This means, for example, that banks are restricted in the amount of lending business they can do because there is no reliable information on which collateral can be assessed.
